First, inform yourself. Do a little research. I'm guessing you have Internet access, at least some, so go online and see what you can find. Use Google or Dogpile, and type something like "formal dress 14-year-old girl" into the search box and see what comes up. Refine your search and keep going. Check out the website for any large stores in your area. If you live in an area where shopping is a major expedition (rural areas, very large cities, etc) check stuff out online and then you'll be much more efficient when you go to town to shop. Being prepared ahead of time with several different ideas of what you'll be happy with will make the trip much more pleasant for you and the adult who takes you.

If you live in a good area for consignment shops (check your area phone book for them, there may be more than you think) it may be a good idea to go looking there. 14-year-olds grow so quickly, you may find good formals for an incredible price because another 14-year-old wore it and outgrew it. If you buy a formal at a consignment shop r other second-hand store, figure the dry cleaning bill into the purchase price. Phone a dry cleaner before you go shopping so you'll know for sure what they'll charge to clean it.
