I think you may find that the on board computer has basically thrown a wobbly, and for reasons best known to it's self has shut down into what is called GET YOU HOME MODE, this uses petrol like it's going out of fashion, and in all probability does not go much above 40 mph ish, the only solution is to have the abominable device reset at great expense at an Main Agency unless a smaller garage has the faculties to do this and charges a more reasonable fee, an earth wire not making full contact can cause this, re the petrol gauge remove the wire from the tank sender unit, and earth it to a sound point, if it now shows full tank, it is reasonable to assume the sender unit in the tank, is u/s and requires replacing, if not suspect the gauge and test and replace as required, they all work on resistance.

If the car, as you say, is running fine then you must be losing fuel. Can you smell it? This hole? if its open and into your tank then perhaps the fuel is evaporating? I think you really need to get the fuel system sorted out. You'll need to spend some money (agh) but its probably for the best. Could be dangerous.

Best to take this to a local mechanic to try some low cost work first.

If it still doesn't work, then you can approach the nearest Rover mechanics - get a quote first.

If too expensive, consider selling it on.

If you dont have a fuel leak, the likeliest culprit for it running rich is your lambda sensor. Might be worth changing (round about £50 new) and see if it helps.
