I just paused the movie to ask. Why did that big machine thing come out of the ground? I thought we were supposed to be attacked by aliens! Awesome movie, though. So far I've never seen anything like it. I don't care for Tom Cruise but he is an excellent actor. The best.

I said I didn't like Tom Cruise as a person. I think he has serious issues. But, he is one of the greatest actors ever. He has never given a poor performance, ever, ever.

For the new version, I think the aliens come down through the lightning strikes somehow, and everyone in the movie is confused and thinks they've been in the ground all the time. I thought that movie was okay, but the end of the movie was just sappy, I won't give it away though. I agree about the Tom Cruise thing, he's a great actor, but a little strange otherwise, oh well, I guess we're all strange in some respects. Good question, enjoy the movie.

If you listen to some of the explanations, they state that the machines were placed in the ground thousands of years ago by the aliens and were just waiting for them to come back to operate them. You will see soon that the aliens themselves are coming down in the lightning that is striking the ground. I agree, Tom Cruise has never been one of my favorite actors, but he did a great job in this movie. The critics didn't like the movie, but I have learned to not listen to them.

The metal things that come out of the ground were actually on Earth for thousands of years waiting for the right time to be unleashed...it explains it in the movie if you pay attention.

Are you kidding me? Almost every movie Tom Cruise does is excellent. I bet you can't name one movie where he did a bad acting job! (check out MI3, A Few Good Men or Minority Report)
Anyway W.O.W. is great too!

Ugh, you mean the re-make? Don't ask me, ask the producers. In the book, NOTHING like that happens. In the book, these cylinders are shot down, and the aliens emerge from them. The movie has horribly mangled the book, in my opinion.
