Because they think the government is Big enough to take care of them. Socialism is a very idealistic philosophy that looks good in some people's minds but it reality it enslaves nations. It's like having too much fat in your body - it'll slow you down; bring your energy levels and moods down. It clogs up the veins and reeks havoc in your system and leads to premature death. Socialism = a premature death of liberty and prosperity!

Socialism works great if you have a product to support the economy.
Take Norway they have billions in North Sea oil. It supports their Socialist Monarchy.
America has no product socialism would never work here. In the 60's and 70's when American grain was feeding the whole world. We were close to a socialist economy then.
Now with nothing to show for our labor it is out of the question. So many of the old programs have been shut down.
Venezuela will most likely do OK as a socialist Nation. If they can keep the crooks hands out of the cookie jar, socialism will help for a while.

The idea of capitalism is awesome, people running their business with no government interference. The only problem is what if it gets out of hand, one company, like ATT in the 80's, controls everything. It's like socialism of the private sector, almost no better than pure socialism. That is why even to be a capitalist society we still need limited socialist practices to insure that the rules are obeyed.
Socialism is more economic than communism, where the government completely controls everything. It is quick fix to a poor country. If the private sector is unable to develop on its own then the government should step in for a limited time to stimulate the economy and back out to let it run its course.

Actually, social democracy is the way to go. Just look at Sweden - strong economy, low unemployment, low inflation, low cost of living, low national debt, long life expectancy.
Pure capitalism ends up with unfair distribution of wealth, with a tendency towards monopolies in business, for example Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

i agree, pirate capitalism is the only way to go. marxism
was brought about by aristocratic capitalists to get goods
and services cheap as possible in a slave labor military
dictatorship. it was better than stealing goods and services
from each other, so as to buy low and sell high. communism
is much cheaper, don't have to pay profit margins in the product you buy. no profit is too high to pirate capitalists. crime pays.
crime lord schools opening now, their motto, do the crime,
never the time. sit on my lap, beat the rap. isn't privatization
totally cool and marvy? the more people released from
prison, the more criminal lawyers can make off recidivists.
business volume people, repeat business. repeat offenders
mean repeat business.

The only reason socialism dosen't work is because there is a certain portion of the population that doesn't want to work, they want everything handed to them, so if you try to cater to this section of society, it's like throwing money in a black hole.
So that's why capitalism is the best, it doesn't cater to lazy people! If they don't want to work hard, let them live in poverty!
