I have four children because I decided I never ever wanted to have a moment to myself again, apparently.

To my understanding, there are many different reasons. I believe that some religions have historically frowned upon contraception--it was considered unnatural, a waste. I believe that it can also be a reflection of one's culture. For instance, some cultures may see having a large family as a sign of fertility and success. Finally, depending on the region, contraceptives may be a luxury that is simply not available or affordable. I have also heard a theory that some peoples have large families because there is a high infant mortality rate...so it is basically "improving the odds." In addition, I've heard the theory that in some situations, the families tend to have a large number of children for practical reasons--the children are there to help with manual labor, farming, etc. Finally, I've also heard it suggested that people who live in poverty tend to have a large number of children because children become "possessions" of sorts--the theory is that family is the only "thing" these people have--the only "thing" that brings them joy. Finally, I'm sure that some would argue that some people in poverty have a high number of children to increase the size of their welfare checks. I'm not sure how that equates, though, as then there are more mouths to feed! Oh, let's not forget that some people just plain love children and probably feel there is no such thing as having too many children!

Seeing only children, being only children. Having a small or spread-out family. Having a big close family. Knowing that a large family teaches many community lessons early on. Knowing that your parents did a swell job, knowing you're great parenting material, knowing your offspring will not be a burden to society. Having enough money. Feeling compelled, on an emotional level, to procreate. Religious reasons.
I think it's different for each couple.

My friend who has 8 had them due to being an only child and she said she never wanted to be lonely again.
I think many moms of many must be hearing impaired for they don't seem to hear nor be bothered by the screaming whining little brats that makes me just want to smack the parents for bringing the damn kids along and not telling them to shut up.
Phew, got that off my chest !!
: )
Happy Sunday !

I think they want to because they are not getting the "personal fulfillment" from their partner. Lots of children will fulfill that gap

I think sometimes it's not "want" as much as fatalism. They think jeebus will take care of them, or they have some "precious moments" vision of babies in limbo waiting to pass through their blessed wombs.
Or maybe they think they will get the love & respect from the kids that they have been unable to earn from the adult world.

Well, some religions support this, as well as some people just like seeing little kids, and interacting with them.
Then again, some people feel that they have lost their childhoods or something, and wish to re-live it in their kids.

So that the children have plenty of playmates growing up, and so that they have a huge family to devote themselves to in their senior years.
