I am not very good at English, and my spelling is no better than poor however I try whenever I write anything, especially where others might have to read it, to use the correct spelling and grammar. I have only come across Yahoo Questions this evening, and have already come across a large amount of poor spelling and terrible grammar. My question is what is the reason for this? Is it purely that people are lazy, or is there more to it?

If there are any spelling/grammar mistakes in this question then my apologies! ;)

Matt Hello,

My spelling and grammar are appalling and I can only apologise. I do use spell check however it's handy being able to spell in the first place. I bow bumbly and ask forgiveness for my inadequate use of the English language.

Best Wishes

I totally agree with you. I find that the grammar and spelling is really horrible on yahoo answers. Some may say it does not matter but what you will find is that if you continue to use bad grammar and spelling it spills into your exams, your correspondence at work etc., as it becomes a habit.

The occasional error is acceptable but it is too widespread.

I know some of you maybe upset with this question but English is being watered down daily and this does not ague well for the future.

There may be many reasons for people not spelling words correctly or putting the wrong type of work in a sentence.

dyslexic

the meanings of words

example

Then, he needs to spell "chair." He spells it "Chere" and it doesn't look right. So on a piece of scrap paper, he writes, "Who dares go there to their Bear's fair?", which is rule 14, the rule for the "air" sound. Then he tries each potential spelling: chare, Chere, Cher, chear, chair; and selects the one that looks right.

or another example would be [there, their]

as long as we can understand what a person is trying to say should it matter that much

A lot of people go for a quick answer and think as long as you know what they are on about it doesn't matter .To some ,English is not their first language.I myself am slightly dyslexic and also not very good at typing.I also spell as I hear and don't always hear too well .People are in a hurry and don't use the spell check.Apart from that,my friend ,They are plain lazy.!

Used the spell check and of all things spelt DYSLEXIC wrong.

I agree with you totally... I think its a combination of laziness, pure ignorance and for some English is not their first language (so it's excusable). Yahoo even provide a spell checker so there is no excuse for poor spelling really.

My friend that is,and has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. One thing is certain, It does speaks volumes about the person who wrote it.Especially when they have a freakin "check spelling" option they could use when they were finished. You summed it up when you said lazy, so lazy in fact that they can't even put the effort necessary into it to do it right.Tells you alot about our society in general, and where we're going.

It's laziness. Pure laziness. Today's generation were raised on text language and American culture. They're not taught any better because of the abysmal education system in this country. If half the people on here could spell and punctuate as well as you do, we might be in with half a chance. x

lol, just kidding. I know what you mean though. I'm actually an English freak and I can't stand it when people spell bad or use poor grammar. It's like they didn't learn ANYTHING in school. They only go over this for YEARS in school....

Most people are lazy and cannot be bothered to go back and correct their mistakes, but some people genuinely struggle with their spelling and grammar.

I think it's because we text more than anything now and words are shortened or spelt differently to make text shorter. Also it's bad grammar too. There is no excuse when there is spell check though.
