Birds, go around the air hovering, looking for a nice chick to have eggs with and then they land and sing a song to the chick, they build a nest and the chick sees it and if she likes it they get married and lay an egg.
The bees, they go around buzzing, looking at other bees and then, one day they finally land on the same flower, look into each other's eyes and they just know all that buzzing is done and they are ready to pollinate.

I never gotten the birds and the bees version. I really don't know what it has to do with sex exactly. But I think it goes something like this:
Birds spreading seeds which grow flowers and then the bees pollinate those flowers so it is a colorful way of explaining reproduction

The male bird attracts the female with his bright colors. One bird called a Bower Bird actually builds a bower to attract his mate and brings flowers- twigs and pretty stones then if she accepts his talents they become mates and later some eggs show up that have to be tended and kept warm so they will hatch properly. Then the parents have to keep the little ones fed well so they can grow up to be healthy and fly off on their own. We may have taken some of our customs from the birds! Doves never have but one mate, that is why you hear songs about the lonesome Dove. Some birds both the male and female take turns sitting on the eggs. When it comes to the bees-The Honey Bee is the most interesting bee to me. There is one Queen, a few hundred drones and 20,000 to 60,000 workers. Worker bees are house bees for about 20 days then there go out to collect nectar that the other house bees turn into honey and they make the honey comb.these are the females. The queen only lays eggs for a few of the females to become a queen bee. The strongest one becomes the queen. Bees themselves must have honey to survive so when honey is taken some must be left behind. Left alone in nature when one of the Queen bee wins her battle the bee colony splits apart each with its own queen. The females who becomes the Queen does so because of her special food called Royal Jelly. As for other bees I can tell you of some of my experiences when i was a child i got stung by some Bumble bees and my food swelled so that i could not wear my shoes and it did hurt. About 5-6 years ago I got stung with about 60 or more yellow jackets(they build their nest in the ground) and all i can say is I am grateful for ice packs and Benedrile. I was in bed for a while with my little dog(ONLY ONE THEN) and he was a puppy feeling so sorry for me and staying near by-he had already experenced a few bee string earlier in his life. Last year I got stung by about 8 hornets-so you see i like to keep Benedril around at all times. Once before two hornets chased me down and i had a terriable headache from their stings. So you see that the birds that are always singing expecially in the spring are mateing and falling in love and the bees even with their stingers manage to mate and reproduce. Moral of this story is that Love(sex) can make you happy so that you may sing a happy song or when hurt a sad one. Even though LOVE hurts sometimes and we feel some pain we just keep on being human and that is why the human race still survives.----One good result i had from the bee stings is that it helped to keep me from having aches pains-so i would believe in honey bee thearpy as long as a person is not allergic to bee stings.

I never had the "birds and bees" talk either. The people who came before me in my family, were so modest. I suppose it was easier to say birds and bees, than it was to say "sex".
You know...The babies found underneath the cabbage, the "stork" bring your little brother or sister. Come to think of it...in the 60's I would not have said the "s" word outloud, and especially in front of a guy. Pruuuud I guess.

I remember the day my dad came to tell me the exact story, funny thing is though I never got to hear it. When he said ' son I know your under age but I've called you out for a beer to tell you a story about the birds and the bees' at 16 I responded immediately with ' dad you don't need to go there cause Anna the exchange student taught me what to do just after my 15th birthday that night you and mum went out for tea, and since then I've been I've practiced plenty ' He spent 15 years on a road crew and to see such a muscle bound role model nearly faint in his chair was hillarious. And I still drank his beer. lol, thanks for a really fond memory

I just googled that question so that I could be the most knowledgeable one to answer, and there were a lot of people looking for the answer to that! All the phrase and word sites said they don't know the origin but they all assumed that it was from the Victorian area when people were a little bit prudish and were trying to teach their kids about reproduction without saying anything slightly sexual. Not very helpful, but there you have it.
