Someone gave us an antique vanity meant for a younger girl. Our daughter is only two, but by the size of it, it would be perfect for a little desk for her. However, even though she is very careful with things, I would like to be able to put something on the top of the surface that will protect it from scratches and other wear and tear as she uses it till she's older. Any suggestions?

Trace the top of the vanity and take it to a glass shop and have a top made for it. Quick, safe and inexpensive.

Your local glass dealer/supplier can cut a piece of glass to your exact measurements to protect the vanity top. ( If it is oddly shaped, make a paper template to assure a proper fit. ) They will grind the edges smooth to make them safe for your daughter. They will also give you small, flat plastic spacers to prevent the glass top from resting directly on the wood, which over time can ruin the finish. I have had glass on an antique dresser for nearly 20 years and it still looks great!

If it is a regular shape (rectangular, etc.) you can buy toppers that have a lip all the way around them to prevent sliding. Most business supply stores (Staples, Office Depot) have something like that.

If it is irregular in shape, consider a glass top. They are more sturdy than you would imagine, although a bit pricey initially.

As a last resort, there are blotters.
