Like ask a driver to take car of maintenance on the car and clean the car on his own time. But the company pays all maintanence and cleaning costs. For example, you have to drive to their autobody shop and sit there for two hours while they fix the car. Another example, you have to go to their car wash and wait until the car is washed on your time.

Probably not. California has a billion laws, most of which benefit the employee.

But if they've given you the car to drive around even when you're not working, doesn't it seem like a good faith effort to take care of that stuff on your own time, especially since it's being paid for by them?

If you don't get to drive it around all the time, I'm sure there's some illegality to that.

No, they can't. Keep records of it, line up another job, and file a grievence. There have been quite a few cases now where employers have had to fork over back pay on that issue. Be somewhere else first, for obvious reasons.

They can ask, but you have the right to say no. If they want you to do something like that, they should pay you for your time.
