Re: "because there aren't any ashtrays around"
I admit, I cannot tell if this response if from a smoker and if it is supposed to be an excuse.

If it's an excuse, does that also mean if trashcans aren't around one is supposed to drop their soda cans and such wherever they happen to be standing?

If the smoker has the habit, shouldn't THEY be responsible for having a means to collect THEIR trash? Are nonsmokers supposed to accommodate their habit?

I am a smoker and I live in a national park ( I am currently trying the Zyban for quitting smoking.) I do not throw my butts on the ground, ( I will however pinch out the lit "cherry" and stamp that out as it turns to ash) the butts go in my pocket until I get home or near a trash can. I respect the beauty of the place I live in and financially though I have never known someone who has been charged a 15,000 dollar fine for littering is quite a deterrent ( I am not rich ) Not everything is an ashtray although I have been known to use a popcan at home when I can't find the ashtry, but that popcan goes in the garbage.

Because smokers by and large, like most every body else are inconsiderant people. They prescribe to the theory that whatever they want to do should be ok for them to do it. why else would they smoke in a crowded room?

Because there aren't any ashtrays around.

I find that highly annoying as well.

Also, it is discourteous.
