Evanston is upscale/university atmosphere and offers many shops and the lake plus it is on both Metra and CTA lines and borders I-94 and Sheridan Rd along Lake Mich.

Go to the following site for hotels on map:

Skokie is not a good choice for your trip, because the Skokie Swift (yellow line) does not operate on weekends.

There are numerous accommodations available near O'Hare airport. A Ramada hotel at Cumberland and the Kennedy Expressway is within easy walking distance of the 'L' and is usually quite affordable. There is also a Holiday Inn between the Cumberland and Harlem blue line stops. There are also many hotels near the Rosemont 'L', but they tend to be more pricey. (Rosemont, Cumberland, and Harlem are all near the end of the blue line 'L', which runs 24/7.) If you are willing to drive a bit, there's a Motel 6 on Irving Park Road in Schiller Park, about two miles south of the Rosemont park-and-ride. There are also MANY reasonably priced motels west of O'Hare in Elk Grove Village, 5 - 10 miles west of Rosemont. All of the O'Hare motels are easily accessible from the Northwest or Tri-State Tollways (I-90 and I-294).

Stay in Skokie. That's the end of the el tracks going north. Stops at Bryn Mawr St.

The yellow line goes from Skokie to downtown. Otherwise if you want to stay in the city, if you're near the redline that'll get you to the tourist areas!
