This happens to me a lot.
Usually, there's a more rational explanation for the lost sock phenomenon.
Here are some places where I've found missing socks:
Stuck under the agitator in the washer.
Stuck inside other articles of clothing.
Under or behind furniture.
In the trash can.
Under a car seat.
In the trunk of the car.
In a suitcase.
Then, there are those cases where the lost sock is never recovered.
In these cases, there may be a black hole which sucks in odd socks & permanently removes them from the normal space-time continuum. Or, they may have been taken by an invisible gremlin.

I dint find this a problem. I have all black socks except for a couple of pairs of white ones for special occasions. So I just have a pile of black socks and I don't know if there is an odd one or not. I just put a clean one on every morning. The other one I leave on for about a month then throw it away. Oh yes by the way I only have one leg

it is the sock monster, who sneaks around the skirting boards quietly seeking socks, when he has found one he will tear it to shreds and eat it excreting small balls of black fluff in corners of rooms and in the centre of room on light coloured carpets.
while not really dangerous this creature is very Territorial and will attack another sock monster invading his territory. Unless of course it is off the opposite sex and mating season. At this time the females go invading male territory enticing the male into giving up his hard found socks and finally mating. She will then retreat to her own territory and make a nest of shredded tissues toilet paper, and your best jumper where she will give birth to a litter of between 4 and 5 socklets, which on maturity she will chase out towards the nearest new housing estate. I do hope that answers your question

I believe the sock is hidden by gnomes. They keep the missing sock, until I deem the other one a polishing rag. Once I ruin the sock in my possession with cleaning compounds, the gnomes sneakily return the missing sock. I keep the gnomes entertained when I launch into my little hissy fit that follows the discovery of the missing sock. Those evil little devils!

lI have had this problem for years, usually it is dark socks. I would suggest you wear outrageous socks, or socks all the same colour. Strange observation, many celebs i.e. the late John Mills always wore red socks. Why? did he know something we are not party to? Sometimes I think the socks are in a parallel universe..

It's the return of the sock monster, and have you noticed that when you finally decide to throw away that odd sock or two ,you find the missing one/s. I have found them in pillow cases ,in fitted sheets, duna covers and of coarse with older washing machines , inside under the spinner.. This phenomena is rife in Australia

It disappears amongst your other clothes. Just shake them out & a sock will fall. Alternatively, buy one of these machine-washable bags you can get especially for socks, so you can keep them all together. It IS annoying, cos when you lose two, you can never match up the two remaining odd ones to make a complete pair.

There's a one footed demon lurking in you washing machine. If you leave the washing in the machine too long after the cycle has finished, it grabs a sock and makes off with it. It happens to us all! You could try exorcism.

A classic Ren and Stimpy episode answered this question. They're in a black hole and part of the mountain of left socks. It's always left socks that go missing. Always. Find a black hole or some other interdimensional portal and you'll find 'em.

The socks get stuck in the back of the dryer. contained in the element that spins has a small hollow and the socks flow in the back of there. I were given rid of my old dryer and placed 15 unequalled socks even as it broke
