A friend wants to do something in the video editing field. Are there schools around New England that have degree programs for this? What types of jobs are "out there" where this could be of use?

Emerson College has a much better program than any of the Art Insititutes. Your friend would be much better off at Emerson.

The New England Institute of Art in Brookline, MA has a Digital Filmmaking & Video Production major. It is a Bachelor of Science degree. I would have your friend check out their website at http://www.artinstitutes.edu/boston/. It is a great school.
There are many jobs in this field, from making your own movies to editing TV shows.
