i'm flying into madrid, and want to spend at least a day or two of my trip in morocco. figuring out how to get there is proving to be a little tricky. i'd like to know whats the easiest/cheapest/least exhausting way of getting there, or at least what my options are. I understand that there are trains/buses/and airlines (and ultimately ferries), but cannot figure out the best way to do things. thanks.

Hi ..I can answer your question. I just made an holiday a few weeks ago making exactly the same journey!

1)You can get an overnight train bus to Algeciras for 25 euro (That leaves at 10pm and arrives at 6:30am)http://www.movelia.es/
And then catch the ferry in the morning.

2)There are no overnight trains.. But two trains a day travel down to Algeciras, one in the morning and one in the evening and take just over 5hrs. The cost is 59 euros.

The trains in Spain are very efficient, punctual and nice..but for major trains you must reserve a seat before hand and arrive a few minutes early to show your ticket and put your bags through a metal detector before entering the train.

3)Ferries To Tangier are really regular , and no need to book. They go throughout the day (in Febuary I think they stop at 7pm but in the summer I think they go through the night)
The jounery takes from 1.5 hrs - 2.5 hrs from Algeciras and costs around 30 euros .

http://www.trasmediterranea.es/
The ferry port is a 5 minute walk from the train station.. But if you come by bus I think you must catch a locol bus or taxi to the port (buses are 1 euro and taxis in Spain are not expensive)
You can catch a fast ferry from Tarifa which takes 30 mins and costs about 20 euros. Tarifa is harder to get to from Madrid than Algeciras. but there is a fee bus from Algeciras for all ferry ticket holders, that takes 40 mins.

NB Before leaving the ferry remember to get your entry card stamped by the porter!

4) I really liked Tangier..and didn't think there was too much hassle. Though many people don't like it.
There are cash machines just as you exit the port building by a supermarket. The supermarket only excepts euros.. but there are a few small stall where you can break your notes.
Beware of the taxi drivers in the port area. Though in general taxis are cheap. Just make sure they use the meter. And no accross town journey should cost more than 10 dirhams(1euro).
When staying in Tangier I really recommend the Hotel Continental (Rue dar baroud 36)
Email: hcontinental@iam.net.ma
Tel: 039 93 10 24
It is really the best hotel in town, has great views of the port. And is stuffed full of charming antiques. It costs about 30 euros and is only 5 minute walk (up a steep hill!) from the port, at the edge of the medina.

5) If you have time I REALLY recommend that you instead of going direct to Tangier you break your jounery in Andalucia It is really wonderful. There are fast trains from Madrid to Seville 2.5 hrs and Cordoba 1.5 hrs. Granada takes longer as there is no fast train but it is a must see with the Alhambra(booking in advance a MUST)

6)If you really insist on speed. There are no Madrid - Tangier flights..but Easyjet flies to both Casablanca and Marrakesh very cheaply
http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp
If you decide to fly I strongly suggest Marrakesh instead of Casablanca as it the most interesting for the tourist and the classic Morocco destination.
Travelling times from Marrakesh are 3hr to Casablanca and 9hr to Tangier by train

The flight will be more expensive than 30 euros if you take into account that you will have to pay the airport taxes. Anyway, the flight is faster and, as we usually say in Spain : time is more valuable than gold! Moreover, if the weather is not good in the Gibraltar Chanel you may be would have to wait for hours for the ferry. Oh!: An accident in Madrid Airport ( Barajas ) some minutes ago of a plain wich was going to fly to Canary Islands! Don't worry, it is completely unusual. lol
