I just can't seem to get the hang of it. What do you recommend?

Open your eyes is a good way to start.
Read something that is interesting to you.
Try to read when there are no distractions.
Start with short stories ie there are many books that have several short stories. This will help to build your interest without you becoming overwhelmed or bored.
Read poems if that suits you they are short and tell a story as well as can be thought provoking.
Start off small and realise that this is a whole new world-reading takes you into the authors world. You can agree or disagree or have no feeling either way. Reading broadens your knowledge, horizons, your command of language and spelling.
Choose the book-smell the book-open the book-and read!!!
Good luck.

Find a book that fits your interests. If you cant, think of a movie you like and read the book version of it. Most of the time, the book is either better or just as good.

Then lay down in a nice, quiet, comfortable place and read it. If you don't like it, give it about twenty pages. The beginning it usually very boring.

First find a book that you are interested in... suspense, romance, adventure, etc. If you can't get through the 1st chapter, find another one. Make sure that you are relaxed and ready to read. Some people read better with background noise, others with total silence. Some like to read lying down, some sitting up. Just try a few and see which one works.

I'm about to take a segue from the rest of your answerers. Get a book you *might* like. Check the time and start reading. Stop and mark your place with a piece of paper with the length of time you read on the paper before reading starts to bother you and use it to mark the page. Mark the time on another piece of paper next day start reading where you stopped but try to read ten minutes longer.

Use this pattern until you break out of it yourself and read for variable, but fairly long periods.

Uhm, you open it, and move your eyes across the page soaking up the information. That sounds about right. If you are illiterate or something then you need to go to school and learn HOW to read. If its a matter of being interested in it, you need to find a good book and a stimulating but not distracting environment to read.

You've got to read things that interest you. I prefer to read when I am alone and in a quiet place, that is comfortable, with a cup of tea and a small snack. I also like to read aloud - for some reason it aids in my comprehension.

Don't give up. The more you read, the better you get.

It all depends on what YOU like. If you watch tv or movies, what kind do you like? If you can narrow it down to you like comedy or mystery, thriller, or whatever else, you can go to your library or bookstore and ask the person who works there what they can recommend in that genre.

Marauders Fan, you've forgotten the most important point! Start on the upper left corner of the first page - the black stuff is the letters ;))

Don't mean to offend you, buddy.
