why is silence important to music?

If the silence became more dominant than the applause, that would probably mean the music was not well liked. I have no problem with immediate applause after the piece has finished. What does bother me is when people are cheering so loud or clapping before a piece finishes. eg. Whitney Houston trying to sing "the bodyguard", or Celine Dion the Titanic song. If the crowd is asked to participate by the singer or instrumentalist, then fine. Otherwise, I wish they'd let the music play out. To expect an audience to sit in silence would be unrealistic. In fact the entertainer might become embarrassed if there was not a fairly quick response. It's just courtesy to ease the performers tension and give credit, by applauding immediately.

Anticipation and implication.

Go listen to any reggae record, or even the Police albums of the early 1980s. It's not the beat, it's the *implied* beat that makes the difference; there's no note, but you expect one.

Other times, there's sustain and suspense. Go listen to Boston's "More Than A Feeling". The gaps create anticipation for the next guitar break, the next drum fill.
