Practically speaking, they prevent noticeable panty lines on tight pants and skirts. However, they were co-opted by skanky teenagers and popstars and now are the epitome of stripper chic. Why? Because they want attention.

Men like women to wear as little as possible.
Women want to attract men.
Some girls think they look "hot" I find it repulsive to see a thong bikini in the public pool or the beach.
The trend in Hollywood seems to be "Going Commando" Gross!!

Because they are such a variance from the norm. Usually, when an item of clothing, or a hairstyle is so totally different and someone we may look up to wears them, then they become trendy.

The shoes I assume you are talking about. There is no reasoning as to why something is in fashion it is just to get us to spend money updating our clothes.

i think some girls think it's sexy when they bend over and accidentally show the tops of their thongs or whatever. I personally think they're used to reduce pantie lines and are probably more comfortable. not to mention sexy as heck

Thongs are meant for a female's butt to look big. This attracts more attention from men. Honestly, i think thats pretty gross.

Because there are sic people in this world.
Most just wear them to be cool, but others wear them so they don't have panty lines. I can understand that, but it is absolutely rediculous to wear one. It is not cool, it is uncomfortable, and it is really sic.
