I've written a rather lengthy children's book and I'm looking for feedback. Although I would appreciate a good proofreader or editor, I'm not looking for perfunctory services right now. What I want is someone who'll enjoy the book and tell me what works and what doesn't from a reader's point of view.

I know, I know. Someone's going to suggest that I give it to a relative, friend, or professor to look over. I've tried that. My little brother wasn't too much of a help, although he is roughly the target audience. Because it's a children's story, I can't think of anyone else to give it to. Would a professor want to read it? Should I try taking it to a writing lab?

So, where should I look? Any suggestions?

If you wouldn't mind an online website, www.fictionpress.com is my weapon of choice. Everything you upload onto that site is copyrighted to you by the site and you can get a hodge-podge of readers.

Or, if you're still into the online idea but would like something a little more closed, www.critiquecircle.com is the next suggestion. You can upload bits at a time onto the site and people will critique your work. The people who are a part of the site are a lot more serious than FP and you will get notes on grammar, punctuations, little minor errors, and things you may have missed.

Outside of the internet-world? I have not an idea, but good luck!

another online site you might try is fanstory.com.. I too am a writer and the most difficult thing is getting constructive criticism/suggestions.. it requires a commitment of time to read a work.. I was part of a writers group for a while and it was very helpful.. We had a great group and environment w/kind people who were also smart and the goal was to improve each others work through suggestions.. I have heard that it is more common to have awful groups... but it might lead to finding a few decent and helpful individuals.. - - good luck

I think maybe you should join a writers' group, and have the members critique your work. This way, you will know that they aren't being "too nice" about it, because they aren't friends or family, and they wouldn't have a reason to lie. Another good thing about joining a writers' group is knowing that whenever you have another piece of writing to share, there's the group. You all can give advice, constructive criticism, and have fun doing something you all enjoy.

I hope that helps, and good luck!

Check Yahoo Groups for a fiction writing group. They will usually read and comment on your work if you'll read their work.
