In the mid 90's the Labour party had to find a way of getting elected.
A way had to be found to woo the Tory voter. This was partly achieved by ditching most of the left wing policies of the old Labour movement and taking on policies that would be acceptable to the Tory voter. i.e. be tough on crime, follow policies that would enhance the economy and to continue the strong ties to the USA. among others.
I believe that Blair presented a figure that was acceptable to the Tory voter and as such he was swept into power, though it is questionable that they have been successful in the implementation of these headline policies.
It is to be seen whether Blair's eventual stepping down and the change in the leadership will see a reversal in the fortunes of the Labour party.

Why do you suppose that so many 'socialists' gave Tony Blair the nickname "Tory Blair"?
The DM is probably on to something.
It's not so much the number of votes a party gets at an election which decides the issue, it's the number of seats gained. In most elections the Tories actually get more votes than do Labour.
There's democracy for you. Now Blaire refuses to acknowledge the massive opposition to his "Road Charging plan" and is going ahead anyway, in spite of there being nearly 1.2million signatures on the petition already. You've got until Feb 20th if you want to sign up.

Yes, I read this article and, as far as I'm concerned I will never vote for Cameron. You say that Blair has possibly destroyed Tory extremism but in fact it seems that thr extreme policies of Labour have created 'Blue Labour'. This is very bad for the country and, to make matters worse, the Tories seem to be the only Blairites left.

New Labour are the extremist of the houses of Parliament, New Labour is the old communist party that has swept in under another name. In the process has destroyed the old staunch moderate Labour diehards. New Labour has destroyed the pension schemes, let out thousand of dangerous criminals onto our streets destroyed the National health service, set up secret police, an ethnic cleansing programme and worst of all is trying to abolish free speech as all Communist dictatorships do.
The Con-u-gay party are basically the New Labour party under the dictatorship of Cameroon, most of the Conservatives are transferring in their droves to UKIP and UKIP look in mighty good
shape at the moment as do the BNP.Not surprising when Cameroon is to force over 20% of Gay candidates in the next general on to the electorate. Well he can do that but will the public accept being dictated to.
In answer to your question you are right, the two main stream parties (in reality) are the Communists and New New labour cons
