I saw your question and immediately thought of Mr. Bingham. He was a great 8th grade history teacher, fun and serious, all in one.

All of our desks faced the blackboard. He'd place a chair on a table, in front of the blackboard. On the chair, he'd place a clean trash can. The trash can represented a basketball hoop.
He placed tape on the floor to represent the spot we shot baskets from. (The basketball was a wadded up, taped, paper ball)
We'd take turns answering his history questions. (everyone had to play)
If you answered incorrectly, you still got to shoot and if you got a basket it was only one point.
If you answered correctly, got a basket, it was three points.
(He picked the teams, not us)

I found that I was eager to learn in his class, so I could "show off" making baskets, with more points!

He was a character alright!....must be special to remember him at 38 years...lol

Let students know they are working to accomplish something other than just a high grade. Offer a reward, but not like a bribe. Maybe if you offer that if students do all their assignments and turn them in on time you get a party every two weeks, or something like that. That way the class works together. I think they would try to work harder. You could also try adding more stories to their lectures to keep students interested. If the students are having fun they will be learning and try harder at it, because they are enjoying it.

Children need to be interested in what they are doing if they are to remain motivated. They excel in subjects that draw out their natural curiosity.Encouragement in school is essential. Appealing to the outer reaches of their minds enables them to overcome educational difficulties that can be caused by overcrowded classrooms, boredom, stress and worry.Teachers have to know when to step in or stand back.Good food aids their concentration, it is essential that students eat breakfast, this is the fuel that keeps their systems going, lunch is just as essential, because they are concentrating in the afternoon as well.A lot of teachers use music in school nowadays as a learning medium ,particularly in English. The lyrics in the songs are used in conjunction with the topic.

They do like candy but want it immediately. The motivation has to come from home. That is not your job as a teacher, if you are one. Prents should instill in their kids that they are expected to do well in school. If expectations are high, the kids reach further.

Incorporate something that they would be interested in. That's what my health teachers do. The funny stories is what motivates us.

The very BEST thing to motivate kids is ENTHUSIASM and EXCITEMENT. If you are both 'enthusiastic' and 'excited' about a subject, then they will be more 'enthusiastic and excited' about them, too.
