I have several areas I need to put access panels in to be able to access cable splitter, gas switch for fireplace, water knob for refrigerator, and hot/cold water knobs, etc.

I'm in the process of finishing my basement and the access panels are on a slope (angle) in the ceiling. I was thinking about using vent openings to access these (you know, the vents that are used for the ac/heat to rooms) I don't believe it would look bad cosmetically speaking, but would like to know if there was a better solution or a better way to access these knobs.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Assuming you are finishing with drywall, the simplest solution is to use plastic clip-in panels that you can buy at most home center stores. Most are spring loaded and snap right on to the drywall as long as you cut the opening to fit the size you get. They can be painted, papered or left bare and only extend out about 1/8". Most have little slots on the edges so you can open them easily when you need to. Some are as large as 24X24 or as small as 6X6. Your description suggests these are all interior areas so you probably don't need to vent the areas and if they are on the interior side of insulation you shouldn't have freezing issues anyway.

you can get various sizes of access panels from lowes or home depot. They are metal and come primed ready to paint. They are hinged on one end and open with a screw drive into a sloted turn lock

The first thing to consider is whether or not the pipes are susceptible to freezing. If they are, then you must allow air from the room to circulate into the access area. The method you described should work. Another possibility is to use drop ceiling brackets and then use the grills that are intended for access to the ceiling. The type that you normally see a light behind. If you have a good building store in your area, it is a good idea to seek them out and pick their brains for ideas. They normally are quite eager to help. Good Luck!

If it is an opening into an area that normally would be shut away behind wall board.....then the vent openings are okay provided you make them dummy vents(close them up permanently).
