I highly doubt it is a matter of life and death but around where I live (in Pennsylvania) they sell them at Petsmart and Petco. If you live near the shore then I'm sure many places on the board walk (if open) sell them.

You are really going to seriously die if you don't get a hermit crab? I'm highly doubting this. Also, keeping pets of any type is time-consuming and can cost a substantial amount of money if they are kept properly to ensure happiness and healthiness, so wanting to approach this from a "cheap" perspective may say you're not ready to keep one yet, so I would suggest getting a book from Petco on how to keep them first. Once you know what you're in for, then get a proper environment set up and then get the hermit crab. I hope this isn't for some kind of bet or something that results in your getting some sort of accolade while the crab just ends up dying.....

How is this a matter of life and death?

Cheap price? Why is that? Be prepared to drop between $65 and $100 for a proper hermit crab set-up, they are not disposable, novelty or cheap items, but live creatures!

Hermit crabs need to be taken care of properly or they will smell and die soon.

Altho you will find a hermit crab cheap at most pet stores - you still need to buy a proper tank and items to insure he lives.

Yes they can be boring. They sleep during the day. So you will only see them moving at night. They can get smelly very quickly - so please be prepared to clean often. Unkept tanks tend to attract mites often.

They need a sponge to drink out of and to keep them from drowning in the water bowl.

You'll need sand or a proper substrate as well.

A hermit crab with everything it needs to get going is going to be approx $25-$30.

(Even tho you posted this in fish I am asuming you want a land hermit crab. If it is a water hermit crab you will need a salt water tank set up. Neither are cheap).

My daughter just had to have a "Hermit" crab--actually they sell you tree crabs. It took her one week to name. She calls it "Boring."
