..doing less reps and more sets. I herd that for more muscle gain, its good to do a lot of reps per set, and for toning you do more sets with less reps.

you should only do about 8-12 reps per set and do about 3 sets for each exercise. try about 4-6 exercises per muscle group. overworking your muscles can actually make them become smaller. YIKES!

First I do not know what your workout regimen is but I will give you the best exercises to do so you can maximize your muscle gains even though it still takes a long time. To gaining muscle you need to LIFT WEIGHTS because muscles ONLY grow because of an outside stress NOT additional protein or food.Back- rows, pull downs, Legs- squats if they are not too hard, leg press, hack squats, lying leg press, biceps-dumbbell curls, barbell curls, preacher curls, triceps- skull crushers, overhead extensions, push-downs, chest- bench press, incline bench press, dumbbell bench press . You need to pick a weight that it is hard to complete the set. Warm up properly with 1-2 sets and do 3 sets of 6-10 reps max. It is progressing by doing more weight, reps or sets that FORCES the muscles to grow bigger and stronger. Be consistent and patient because gaining muscle takes longer than losing fat. You can gain at a rate of 5- 10lbs of pure muscle in a year so lift hard and heavy and stick with it the results will come.

Generally speaking, if you're doing 4-8 reps, you're primarily working on strength, 8-10 is best for mass gain, 10+ for endurance.
