You want the Flamingo!! The hotel was nice, rooms were clean, perfect location on the strip, and price was right. If going in the summer the pool is really nice. I highly recommend it

First time I went we stayed in the Orleans too - it was OK. I think Sam's Town where we stayed on another visit was excellent. It is a few miles off the Strip, but it runs free shuttle buses to the Strip every 15 minutes and wherever you find yourself later on you will be able to find a pick up point for the shuttle back. It has a couple of restaurants (the steak one was very good) and it has its own sound and light show with dancing water fountains and a wolf (not a real one). They also have their own 10 pin bowling alley (we were there to watch the 10 pin bowling World Cup tournament).
We stayed at The Luxor last time I went and that was good very too, although it is right down one end of the Strip - but the trolley buses are an easy way to get away and back.

I have stayed in many hotels in Vegas but the one that gave me the most bang for the buck is the Las Vegas Hilton. It's not on the strip, but it's just a hop, skip and a jump from the Riviera (which is on the strip). They have nice rooms, the hotel is beautiful (it is a Hilton) but they don't overcharge. I've stayed for a week with a rate of $50 a night during the week and $89 a night on the weekends....with advance booking. The LVH is also connected to the Las Vegas Convention Center so there is always something going on.

I've stayed at the New York New York, Excalibur, Imperial Palace, Bally's and Treasure Island. For location and price, Imperial Palace was the best - really cheap and centre of the Strip but nothing flashy. I had heard it was being knocked down. We had the best room at Ballys, massive with a king size bed and sitting area, the back wall was all window overlooking the mountains. NY NY was a great hotel, really cool as was TI. Probably wouldn't stay at Excalibur again. I'm staying at the Orleans in 3 weeks time so I'm pleased to hear your comment about it.

Residence Inn a block east of the Strip at Flamingo and Paradise. It's an extended stay place, so they have kitchens with dishes/silverware/pots/etc., a few outside grills if you want to have a cookout, a small pool area, a halfcourt basketball court / tennis court, good free breakfast in the morning, free happy hour with drinks and snacks (which can often count as dinner).
If you want to stay on the Strip, TI and Mirage are good. The rooms are good sized and the resort/casino side is very well rounded. Mandalay Bay is another good one - make sure you specify a renovated room if you go there before August when the renovation is complete.

The Orleans has the best bang for the buck. It is an inexpensive place that has bowling, movies and all the gaming you could want. If you are lucky you can get a Minor league hockey game.
The stratosphere is another great place. The best place to stay to contemplate life is the observation deck. Then it is time to go on the scariest rides you could imagine. You are 1000 feet up flying around on these rides and it is great!

I have only ever stayed in one - the Luxor. It was brilliant. We had an armed guard at the bottom of our lift (the one that goes sideways and not straight up and down) Lots of places to eat. The room was great two giant size beds. But no coffee maker! The only prob was it was so far from anywhere else but there was the bus - which was an experience in itself.

I think the Golden Nugget is a good choice. They have nice rooms, not too expensive, and they are right off the Strip.
