About a month ago, my Social Security Card went through the wash. I hadn't thought about it for a while, but decided to go about replacing it a week or two ago. I mailed the application, along with a college ID, to my local social security office, and got a letter back stating that they couldn't replace my card, b/c i didn't have the right form of ID, even though they said a college ID will work. now the're saying that I need a state ID or drivers license, which I can't get without a social security card! how is it that you can order a copy of your birth certificate online, yet it is nearly impossible to get a copy of your social sercurity card.

Star all over again, apply for a copy of your birth certificate so that you can get a Social Security card. Then get a driver's license and a state ID so that when your SS card is lost you have IDs to show and vice versa for the loss of any of your other IDs.

Sorry, but the other answers are incorrect. You cannot use a birth certificate for ID. It only proves that person was born - not that the person still exists. Due to the passage of IRTPA in 12/05, the ID rules for getting a new card have been extremely tightened up by Congress. You have to show a primary piece of ID. For a US citizen, the ONLY primary types of ID are a valid US drivers license, a State issued ID card, or a US passport.

If you don't have this, you will not get a card. However, using other forms of ID such as the insurance policy, etc will allow you to get a print out that verifies your SSN. You MUST do this in person (for your own protection - print outs will not be mailed). Once you have that, you can get your license replaced, then go and get your SS card replaced.

A school ID only works for a child under 18.

The Social Security Administration says to do as much work with them by phone or computer, but I've learned that it is better to go in in person and be calm. Did you have all the forms of ID they required--birth certificate, college ID, etc. Then go in and see what happens.

Go to your Social Security office in person, if you have pay stub or your birth certificate, they will help you. You'll be able to file for a lost Social Security Card. If you have a life Insurance policy that will also help. My friend lost her card but she knew the number and along with her Life Insurance Policy she got her Social Security Card. That on line applications is hard to get anything because of so much on line theft. Just take all you have with you, you'll get it.

Sorry but some of them are right... I just went to do the ss card and they need the birth certificate because THEY NEED TO KNOW IF YOU ARE AN AMERICAN CITIZEN otherwise you will need to show them a GREENCARD or WORKPERMIT, but this is not your case nor status so, bring whatever form of ID, passport, college id, or other you may have as well as your birthcertificate all original and your washed SSCARD and go IN PERSON, it will be an hour of waiting aprox but believe me they will help you.

Good look

Take ALL your id's AND ESPECIALLY your birth certificate (original, not a photocopy) and see them...it'll work out....take the washed up SS card TOO.

Just go into your local social security office & try it that way its so much easier to do stuff like that when you do it in person.
