Tuning can be an issue especially with new strings that are stretching. Another issue, are you tuning the strings to each other? I have found that when I tune 2 adjacent strings they sometimes don't sound right after I'm done (chords don't ring true). When that happens I go back and try to tune by octaves. Tune an A on the G string, then tune the A string to that. If all else fails try an electronic tuner. Don't ever try to tune on a piano. There are too many overtones.

I love the sound of a ukulele. I despise the sound of any instrument played badly. With only four strings it's relatively easy to play.
Good luck!
