Honestly, it was just getting old.

It had lead pipes to bring water through, thereby poisoning the people in Rome with Lead poisoning over the GENERATIONS.

Its leaders became weaker and weaker allowing for the barbarians from the North to invade and finish them off. The Barbarians came saying they wanted to "join" the Empire, then when they got close enough, they attacked.

They're rulers cared more about self-power and self-interest than the public good.

Christianity upset the balance of the old religion. People warred within Rome of the correct way to worship.

They had some VERY bad Ceasars such as Heliogabalus, Nero, and Caligula, etc., who were mass murders, insane and had no grip on reality.

These are just a few reasons.

There are a lot of opinions on what caused the fall of the roman empire, but most agree on certain facts. It got too big. The Barbarians from the north were constantly pillaging and destroying towns making the roads unsecure for trade and cutting off the tax revenue back to rome. Because of the lessened tax revenue the soldiers didn't get paid and started plundering as well. Rome was emptied of many of its affluent citizens who took off to the country with their slaves so the society that was dependent on the work these affluent merchants and senators wanted done was unemployed. At one point there were 300 thousand homeless in Rome it had become so destitute. The currency was devalued at one point because one of the cesars called back all the money, melted it down, made new money claiming same value, but actually made more money and kept more for himself distributing the new, ''lighter'' money. Anyway, there were many reasons. The fact that they relied so heavily on slaves really hurt them in the long run too becuase any working class that receives no reward for more efficient work will not be an innovative work force. Why try to find more efficient ways to work if it doesn't matter?

lots of things combined to end the roman empire... most of the main ones have been covered already... lead poisoning from many place.. one the water fixtures but another not as well known source was bracing on the barrels used to store wine... birth rate decline among "true Romans" steadily dropped... a need for a middle class to rise and fill the void left by a declining upper class.."citizens"... lack of respect or justice from an openly corrupt government where positions and decisions were bought... constant expansion of borders to generate increased wealth for military. the list goes on for awhile

Many and varied. Mainly, it got too big, and too decadent. The size of the civil service put unbearable tax burden on the people, and internal factions led to a series of crippling civil wars.

corruption within the military, weakening its ability to be unified. Lead pipes carrying water into Rome caused serious brain damage to all peoples, young and old, rich and poor, and lowered their ability to reason and function from the previous generation.
