He was a martyr. He was to be burned alive, but the flames didn't hurt him. Instead, he was stabbed to death and his body was burned post mortem. He was also a disciple of John.

St. Polycarp was a 2nd century bishop from Smyrna who knew the apostle St.Jolhn and was martyred for the faith .His name means many fishes . His name is actually closed linked to the symbol of the Christian faith in the early Church. You see fish means in Greek ichthus which is an abbreviation for titles for Jesus i=Jesus ch Christ th theos God u for son s=soter or Savior.
