Doesn't it seem that most winning coaches have a sort of quiet, flamboyant attatude about them, not taking their knowledge of the game into account, while losers always seem to be grumpy old men....or grumpy young men... That's why I can't understand Jerry Jones hiring Wade Phillips. He just doesn't fit the "Cowboy Way." I predict that the Cowboys, and I'm a Cowboy Fan, will not recover from this hiring for five or six years. And that is a shame because they were...let me repeat that...were...on the threshold of success. All they needed was to get rid of grumpy old Parcels. I bet the Redskin Fans are jumping for joy. In other words, I think a coach has to "fit ." And "grumpy" people don't fit into coaching anywhere. Why people who do the hiring for these programs don't realize this at the interview I don't know. What's your openion?

Cant figure it out myself. Grumpy Bill couldnt win a game in cleveland now he cant seem to lose in new england. Its got to be the players and the coaches staff, I cant imagine a coach makes that big of a difference. They all know the same plays and schemes. There isnt anything different about the game then there was 10 years ago.

As usual coaches get too much credit when a team wins and too much blame when they lose. Most important things for coaches to have are: 1) talented players 2) a proven system 3) people and motivational skills

I think its persistance and being a good communicator. if you team dosent like you they wont play hard. Look at the colts, there was no way they were going to do anything in the playoffs this season. They pulled together listened to their coach and won the super bowl. I hate Bill Cower but he knew how to make his players listen. Bobby Knight is the same way.

On the college level, the essential skill is recruiting. In the pros, it is human relations.
