how do I caulk?

Ok, I've been flipping homes for 10 years, done several dozen complete bathrooms, and I can't do a decent job with caulk.

Is it like singing, am I just tone deaf when it comes to caulking? Is it hopeless?

What is your secret to a quick, professional looking caulk job, is it like boxing as in moving your hips not just your arms, is it like spraying paint where you move your whole body not your wrists only?

What am I doing wrong, this is easy crap, and I can't seem to ever make it look decent.

I can relate to your dilemma. Although, I must insist on a trade in secrets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a GREAT coc....(A'Hem) sorry!!!!!!!! CAULK layer. The objective is 2 things; once the tube is flowing, you MUST and I mean MUST keep the tip of the gun moving. At the same time, learn how the pressure-switch in the back of the gun works. When you cant squeeze the trigger no longer HIT THE PRESSURE RELIEF-SWITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this will stop the flow of whatever you are applying. I know that it can get messy. You should always prepare your worksight, as well. Get plenty of clean-up rags ans a bowl of water. Trust me- this is critical!!!!!!

Do not cut the hole any bigger than a 12 ga wire . If you are using caulk to seal not fill a hole , this is the best bead size . Even pressure on the trigger . Or invest in the Ryobi cordless caulk gun ... Works great .

The easiest thig to do is to follow the bead of caulk with your index finger. That way you push the caulk into the crack, and it smooths out the bead into a good-looking finished job. It will take some practice until you can do it with one hand, but I know it works.
