it really doesn't matter but I like certain teas the restaurants usually don't carry....do you think the restaurant would mind? Thanks!

to garacius, a simple no would have sufficed...
and if you sizzle or my question and need to call me names to make yourself feel better, then you have some issues you need to deal with.

No. I think there's a lot more rude stuff people do in restaurants.

It shouldn't be an issue. Just ask for a cup of hot water and make sure you tip extra heavy, like 25%.
They don't have to let you do that. Their business is serving food. If you want something they don't have, go somewhere else.
It may even be a health code issue. If you bring outside food in and for some reason you get sick, what's to say it wasn't the thing you brought in?
Also, by you drinking that tea, they are working for no money, having to heat the water, wash the cup and bring it to you and throw out your garbage. You should also pay a surcharge (at least the price of a cup of tea). Be very polite and prepared to accept no for an answer.
You do run the risk of upsetting the waitstaff or the cooks and they could spit in your food or do other unsavory things to it. You never know who is doing what to your food.
Best not to test them.

No, it's not rude, but unfortunately the 2nd most hated order in most restaurants is hot tea. The most hated is hot water for a tea bag brought in. As stated prior, it is technically a health code violation in some areas. Most restaurants will let you, but remember it is a request and if treated as such and not a demand you should be fine. However, if they do say no, there's no need to argue just don't go back. There are many restaurants and when you come to mine, the hot water will be yours.

If it was a favourite restaurant, that you frequent often, I would talk to the manager about increasing tea choices. Otherwise, I would find an alternative (actually hot water with a slice of lemon is good), and save my favourite teas for when I'm at home. I think it's just a case of good manners - I wouldn't bring my own tea bag if I was visiting a friend either (I might give her a box of my favourite tea, tho!).

I work in a restaurant. I wouldn't mind if we didn't carry the specific tea and if you were very nice. You can do a lot if you're nice about it. A nice tip goes a long way too.

Go ahead, bring your own tea bags if you'd like!!! When I go out with my friends, lots of times my friends want to eat one place & I want to eat someplace else. So, we get carryout for one of us & sit in at the other restaurant for the other one of us ....... and we both eat there, together!!!
I really don't think that there is anything wrong with it!! And nobody ever says anything about it!!! So, go for it!!

I do. Just ask for hot water along with your food. Never had a problem since the server is looking for a tip.

Yes. But, I would explain it otherwise, you come across cheap. Plenty of older ladies just order hot water and drink it.

All you could do is ask them. Explain that you like a certain kind that they don't have. If your spending money on dinner i'm sure they won't care.
