I am a single parent and have sod all left at the end of the month because I have a huge mortgage. My 20 year old daughter wants to go to university and it is calculated that I can "top up" her living expenses when granting her loans and grants. If I was on the dole or living in Wales she would be quids in but because I work full time and live in an expensive area she will either struggle or drown. We calculate she will have about £36K student debt at the end.

If she was estranged from you, you wouldnt be expected to top up her expenses. Im not saying you should do anything about it, just saying.
Otherwise, its an unfair system. Education is supposed to be free, as is healthcare etc. But it aint. And the government have made sure you cant put student loans into a bankruptcy petition (cos its 'public money') so theres no escaping it in later years. They also seem to be lowering the level of earnings at which you have to repay the earlier style loans (like I have). Bearing in mind of course that the govt all went to Uni when they had no fees to pay and got grants whatever.

The reason is that our students unlike the French put up with things or as is happening decide not to go to University at all.If we had student revolts and demonstrations then Government would think again. I am not advocating anarchy just suggesting that this is why governments do get away with things in this country. The one example I can thinkof where people power did have an effect was at the time of the proposed poll tax.But they get you in the end I suppose

They get away with it because people don't use their votes at general elections. If everyone who didn't turn up, or voted labour because their families used to vote labour had tuned against labour at the lat election, they would have been made to pay for this and a thousand other things.

I would refer you to the fact that - how have Labour been able to get away with everything they have done - students are no different I'm afraid!
