natural selection didn't favor them, when the habitat changed, and some of its food died. however some related species went on living (tigers?)

climate change dictated the end of much of the plant life, which killed off the species in which the preyed upon, thus leaving them with no prey to eat. Thus, like most big cat deaths its starvation.
