When I was a kid those cheesy TV horror movies always scared me, especially "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Trilogy of Terror" (not the whole movie but just the last story when the little warrior doll came to life and chased Karen Black around her apartment).
Everyone's mentioned most of the standards but The Shining is a must have and I'd also get the miniseries TV version of it that followed the book much more closely. The Omen was good and the recent remake of it was good too. I also love the first and second entries in the From Dusk til Dawn set, skip the 3rd (The Hangman's Daughter). Evil Dead 2, Frailty, High Tension, The Others, The Night Flier, Pet Semetary (just the first one) - I could go on and on. If you're going to buy them though I would definitely rent it first to see if it's worth it. I bought The Last House on the Left after reading the description on the back - pure crap!! One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

These are some must haves: Alien, John Carpenter's The Thing, Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist, Silence of the Lambs, Seven, and The Blair Witch Project (scariest indie film ever)

LOVE SCARY MOVIES!! Have tons!! I tend to lean towards the classic, black and white, horror movies...Boris Karloff and Vincent Price. Of course the 1st Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th(#1), Halloween(#1)...not big on sequels...ummm The Ring and Saw we're awesome. Just when you thought they'd covered every horror subject...hope this helps

The Exorcist, The Ring (this scared the SH!T outta me when I watched it, had nightmares for MONTHS), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong Turn, The Descent, and a few other ones. There's many scary movies, I can't pick just one.

I have to go with The Shining too. The Ring scared me pretty good. I heard Hostel was really scary. Also, Audition-it's a japanese horror movie- you should check it out.
