It's obviously not (a), since we don't have a king or any hereditary royals running around. And it can't be (c) since the president does have to be elected by somebody at some point. So long as George Bush steps down in Jan. 2009, no matter what you think of him, you can't call him a dictator. We're not a direct democracy (d), either - when was the last time the president asked people to vote for one of his policies? We could be considered an oligarchy, except that the electoral college members are supposed (though they aren't constitutionally required) to vote for the candidate who wins the majority of their state's popular vote. So as imperfect as it may be, we are left with what we have, which is a representative democracy.

d) Pure democracy is the system where the people selects the head of the state. In the United States, the President is selected by the electoral college that represents all the people of the USA. Thus, America has a pure democracy.

representative democracy...

the US elects representatives and senators then those representatives vote on the important issues. If we the citizens voted on every issue then it would be a direct democracy.

It is supposed to be "e" but does not always feel like it, especially when the popular vote does not match who wins the electoral votes.
