This is kinda a few questions in one, so, here it goes: We are planning on going to Japan, but we haven't set a date yet. My mom says definitely not this year, maybe in 2008. My twin sister and I are in 6th grade now, so in 2008 we will be in 7th grade. We would be staying for 2 years or more in Japan. (Mom is teaching English.) When do you think we should go?
Also, what are good places for tourist to go in Japan? What shrines should we visit? What sites should we see? What restaurants should we eat at? Where should we shop? Please write everywhere that you think is somewhere we definitely don't want to miss out on! Also, what are some things we should know before we go?
And, one last thing, how old do you have to be to get a job in Japan? This is purely out of curiosity.

Bonsai Bobby: Thank you for the compliment to my literacy. I read a lot.

But I don't mean to sound conceded.

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I have more coming! What can I do to fit in better, when I go to Japan? I hear that, although they will be extremly nice and polite, and never mean, to foreigners, that they don't really like foreigners.

The best person to ask would be someone you know who lives in Japan. I would suggest, between then and now, getting a Japanese pen-pal. You do not know any of us and you do not know if any of us are going to feed you a line. This site is full of people who give you answers just to screw with you.

You might want to start learning the Japanese language and learn of their traditions and customs. They have a glorious, rich heritage. I would think that the Japanese you meet would appreciate that, even if you do not have it completely correct. Just the effort to do this would go a long, long way, I would think.

Take plenty of pictures!

I admit to a bit of envy of you. I have always wished to visit Japan.

I am sorry I could not help more.

To answer your Additionals: Although there may be some people who won't like you just because you're foreign, not all will feel that way.

Do try to spend some time learning the language -- at least common, basic stuff.

And try to learn about the culture, but when you get there, don't try to act Japanese -- there will be subtleties that you won't have mastered, and the respectful, but unknowing newbie is more palatable than something who THINKS they know, but messes up.

As for where to eat and such. Your Mom's co-workers will, no doubt, have suggestions about that.

Also, spend some time surfing relevant sites. I'm sure there are websites on "What to do in Japan."

Mostly, relax. You'll probably have a great time, as you seem open-minded and eager to learn about the place.

Enthusiasm is irresistible.

(Sorry I can't give specific suggestions; I don't know the place.)

First.. I am amazed at your literacy, especially for a 6th grader?

One thing that I may point out(concerning Japanese culture) is their collective pride in the art and antiquity of Bonsai.(as my avatar is testimony to) Caution, you may get very attatched to this art form if you study it very long. Bonsai is a source of great pride in Japanese familes,as Bonsai are handed down from generation to generation. Some, being as old, as 1000 yrs.

Have fun!! Bonsai Bobby

Enjoy yourselves, don't get so wrapped up in planning to be a tourist that you miss the simple elegance of ordinary, everyday life in Japan. They are beautiful people, so practice your japanese so you can really get to have fun with them! And be respectful, study their customs in advance to you don't look like typical ignorant Americans.

They will love you!
