Erm all your internet traffic passes through their servers - of course they can, they also know what sites you visited, how long you were there, what you looked at ;) and downloaded ;) x2. So you're probably in big trouble!

Anything put out on the Internet can be read by anyone with the equipment and talent to do so UNLESS it is encrypted. So the answer is yes.......but why would anyone want to read your IM when there are so many millions of messages out there to read. The odds of that happening are very very small.
Remember - email and IMing is like sending a 'post card' through snail mail. It is not in an envelope and anyone who handles it can read what you've written.
Only encrypted messages and email are secure on the net.

Yup. E-mail and Instant Messaging content is generally sent in plaintext (i.e., as-is). E-mail can be encrypted if the package you're using supports it (usually by way of a trusted X.509 digital certificate), but Instant Messaging clients generally do not encrypt.
To determine the content of an Instant Message conversation someone need only sit between you and the recipient and "sniff" the data packets as they stream by. You could do this yourself, as an experiment, by installing a packet sniffer on your machine and watching the endless flow of bytes on the bitstream. Spot anything familiar? ;-)

If all the data from your dads computer passes through the company's servers, then Yes, they might be able to intercept all information.
I suggest you use a different computer, not connected via his network.
You'll soon know anyway ;-)

of course , all the data that gets sent goes through their system, why worry, who will check this anyway.
Now run along and be a good boy.

Technically they could, but it would be illegal so they are not allowed to. IF they do you have the right to sue them. So the technical answer to your question is no.
