Yes, you need to hook up left and right sides to get the turn signals to operate on the trailer. You also need seperate connections for the tail and stop lights. On some later model cars you cannot connect directly into the wires as it "loads" the circuitry and will not allow them to operate correctly, For this type of car you will also need an "interface module" that isolates the trailer lights fom the car system.

If you buy a trailer hookup set, usually $10-$15 at an automotive parts store, it will have instructions on where to hook it up and special splicing joints that allow you to tap into the wires without cutting them. The other end of the plug/socket set gets wired to te trailer lights.

You actually need four wires,

1. Tail lamps (one wire from either side) This will operate the dimmer of the two elements in the bulb.

2. Left side brake indicator, from the left tail lamp.

3. Right side brake indicator, from the right side lamp.
(these will also act as the "blinkers" and will light up the brighter
of the two elements)

4. One wire to "ground". You don't want to try and ground through the trailer ball.
