If its because of a bad battery, does removing the battery and using the adaptor only help?

hot-hot is bad
Try to get some air flow around the adapter. Also check to see if the battery or adapter have been recalled. Sony and Dell have ad some problems (Sony makes a lot for others).
A bad battery can make the adapter hot too!

it depends on just how hot it gets. If it is too hot to touch, then it is getting hotter than it should!
Your ac transformer will get pretty warm and that is normal!

Some brands have recalls on their adapters. Check out if yours does.
