Not all are the same but a lot of women become sex trade workers because they need money. As obvious as this answer is there are a lot of underlying motives. Lack of education, women who need the money to feed children, a drug habit or to simply pay the rent.
The high class madams that some use as examples are really few and far between. Prostitution is a terrible scourge to females and the fact that it is prevalent in our society shows that the social safety net that should be present to protect females and a lot of children is simply not there.
Legally the punishing of prostitution is not working and the money used for prosecution and incarceration should be used to educate and rehabilitate. Children should be given the basic necessities in life such as food, shelter and clothing so that their mothers and they themselves do not need to pursue this occupation.

Which economy?
Third World & War evacuees have different motives than developed countries.
War evacuees (Like escaping Iraq to Saudi) find that they lost their families, and are prohibited to work from culture. This forces them into prostitution. This is resulting in many Muslim women forced into prostitution rather than choosing.
Third World like Cambodia, Philippians‘, Viet Nam, & Thailand are often sold by their parents into prostitution. Then the girls are expected to send earnings back to their families.
Russia has a drug revolution going on, and this is blurring social norms. Additionally, with a collapsed government, poverty is creating a situation where prostitution is prosperous; especially if you have a drug addiction. Interestingly, Russia has more women than men, and this is hindering prostitution a bit.
Developed countries (USA, Britain, Italy, ect) seem to be having a "Human Trafficking Problem" where they buy and sell women from the third world countries & war evacuees (from Mexico, Asia, and Africa) and then by taking away papers (Green Cards) they're able to force the women into prostitution. A few who've escaped claim that under the massive casino's in Los Vegas, many are kept in dungeons for this profession; however, the Los Vegas government denies this.

Women become prostitutes the same way they become doctors, it is their choice. The sex industry is glamorized in every aspect of our society so it is only natural for a female with little to no education who needs money fast to take this route. The motivation for women to become prostitutes is the same as for young black males selling drugs, MONEY.

Why become a prostitute? A few people do it for greed, as some people can work a single shift or job one day a week and live off it. However many others are cajoled by poverty, debts or drug addiction. Prostitution is a spoiler for any meaningful relationships, so it can be used subconsciously by those who want to avoid them due to past trauma.

What if religion never existed and therefore no societal taboos existed against prostitution? Most problems (almost all problems) in our world stem from religion. Prostitution is illegal because of morals. Morals are rooted in religion. What is morality? It is what society tells us it is. So, if we're told that prostitution is immoral, just about everyone goes along with it, condemning prostitutes, arresting them, and trying to rid the world of them. It isn't however, immoral, for a businessman to screw employees out of their hard-earned penions, lay people off so executives can make bigger bonuses, and produce products that are harmful and wasteful. So, tell me, what is morality?

There are as many motives as women, I am afraid. Some do it because they love sex. Some because they are uneducated and need more than minimum wage to live and/or raise their kids. Some say it is because of white male oppression and its effects on opportunities for women. Some do it because it can be fast, easy money. But it is very dangerous. Some do it because they have been abused and they do not see another way for themselves. Some need money for drugs or a gambling problem. Some do it to please a man they love.

At age 40, I went to Nevada and worked in the brothels for 6 months, making $200-700 for an hours work. I learned more about men and how they love and think in those few months than in the all my years. And learned allot about me, too It was a great experience and a good time. But knew it was only temporary. (I was also a college graduate and had career to I could return too.)

Many countries do not provide for their people well. Many young girls need it to provide for their parents or grandparents. Socialism falls short of all it's promises. The prostitutes in this country are not in it for lack of government care for families. Any exceptions are rare. Illegal drugs in this country cause prostitution not lack of government care. Any exceptions are rare compared to other countries.

Some say they were sexually abused by their fathers, brothers, stepdads and they think that's an excellent reason to go out and sell themselves to strange men. They think all their good for is performing lewd sex acts with men and then *********. when they get AIDS or another STD. Well what do you expect when you do that kind of work? Or they're junkies and need quick cash for drugs. Or they have kids and can't bear to get a real job so they become prostitutes to feed their kids.
