I wash mine every time I use it. You can wash it in the sink with warm soapy water, or in the dishwasher.

I use vinegar or Windex for general cleanups.
Periodically I take it apart and put the top part in the dishwasher. Use a toothbrush to get at any crevices that need additional cleaning..

must be electric huh?-look at the unit closely-some of the manufactures put a release button on their units that allow the "working area" to be removed for cleaning in the dish washer. If no button-tooth brush and fantastic or rubbing alcohol (unplug unit first) paper towel to clean
yes cleaning is important-food does transfer to the cutter wheels
