Phytoplankton provide all the energy for all the organisms in the entire ocean, because thety are the primary producers, using photosynthesis to create food. It serves for at least half of the total photosynthetic output on the entire planet. Zooplanckton are little animals which feed on the phytoplankton- these also serve as the food source for numerous animals, such as whales, fish, coral, sea anemones, etc.etc.

phytoplankton are photosynthetic in nature and are therefore producers while zooplankton are primary consumers(since they are not photosynthetic in nature)
