The reason for that is that Bermuda is inside of the North Atlantic Gyre, a very large set of currents which circulate water clockwise from the Caribbean, up the US east coast, across the North Atlantic, back down (South) towards the tropics off the west coast of Africa, and then west back towards the Caribbean. This Gyre is a very large hill of water that is elevated by roughly a meter at its apex. This meter difference in height is practically imperceptible because it is stretched over several thousand kilometers, but they can be detected by Satellites (see the link information below). Bermuda is much closer to this apex (peak) than is New York.

Because New York is downhill from Bermuda of course. Thats why surfing is so popular there. You just get on your surfboard, and you can coast all the way to Manhattan. It levels off around where the statue of Liberty is, from where you have to paddle. Shucks! I thought EVERYBODY knew THAT!

If that is true, then it's probably either because the land of Bermuda is lower than New York or because the sea shelf off the coast of Bermuda is lower than that of New York
