Peyton is one of the best. But...this list has to include at least 25 people. I say this because of the eras that various guys played in, the nuances of their positions, the teams they played for etc.
I can't think of a way to fairly compare Manning with, say Dick Butkus. How would you begin. Different eras. Different rules. Different positions.
I remember Butkus and always regarded him as the standard that other defensive players should be judged by. Conversely, I also remember Joe Montana and have never seen a cooler customer under pressure.
This is a good topic. Maybe we can break it down by positions and get an all history team.
I love Peyton but am not going to crown him king just yet. Let's try to make this a discussion people and not start punking each other's teams. I try to be objective.

In football, because of the diversity of positions, I don't think you can call someone the 'best football player ever', instead we must discuss each player based on position.
With his statistics...if Peyton can win one more Super Bowl I'd say he's the best QB ever. People were going on and on about how his opportunities were dwindling, but he's only, what, 32? He's got a good 5 or 6 years left to win more.
If I were pressed to name one football player as the best ever I'd go with Jerry Rice. His numbers and success were so astronomically higher than any other WR, plus he earned a few rings.

I agree with some of the previous posts that you can't compare players from different eras.
Manning is the best QB right now in the pocket but can you give all that credit to him? Doesn't he require a solid offensive line and most importantly some great receivers? As I wrote in another post, Manning had two players over 1000 yards this season and for example Brady didn't have one single player over 800.
I don't know but could it be that Manning makes his teammates look good or is it his teammates that make him look good.
Don't get me wrong. I think Manning is an awesome QB but these kind of stats convince me even more that you can't really compare players.
Even if he would play for teams like Cleveland or Houston he would probably be considered a very good QB but I doubt he would even be close to a discussion to be the greatest of all time.
So my conclusion is that there are/have been a lot of awesome players in the NFL but you can't compare them because they all played under different circumstances.

Manning is a good NFL QB. The best ever to play? I'd say absolutely not. By the end of his career he'll probably be in the Top 10 but not the best.

I am biased being a huge colts fan. I would say yes. Rings dont make a great quarterback. Look at Grossman he had a horrible season but his TEAM pulled him through. The same goes for losing, it takes more then a quarterback to lose a game. When u think of marino you think of a great quarterback who holds all kinds of records. Then you remember that he never won a super bowl. but it dosent make you think any less of him. I think now that peyton has a ring, its all gravy baby. He will own all of marinos records when he retires in 10 years.

No out of qb's I'd say hes in the top 30 ever but you can't compare him to Favre in his prime,Montana,Unitas,Starr,he hasn't gotten to those ranks yet.If he can continue to do what he has done this season he will be in the top 5 ever.

No...
He is the current Super Bowl MVP, so many will think he is the greatest. He is nothing more than the "flavor of the week."
Personally, I would not even call him the best quarterback ever (muchless greatest overall player).
