If you have long hair...putting it up is elegant.
Color of dress?
If you have a fair complexion, go with peach, red, light blue, or black.
There really aren't a lot of rules on what to do right but many rules of what NOT to do.
I would buy a teen magazine for ideas. Right now they know prom season is in the planning. Tell your date what you will be wearing because he has to buy a corsage.

Okay, if prom is next week, you need to go out and start shopping for a dress RIGHT NOW!! Look in the phone book or ask your friends where they get their formal dresses and go out and start shopping. It'll take a while to find a dress that you like and that fits you.
I always wore my hair straight and down to formal dances. I never had enough money to pay to get it done, and I'm really bad at doing hairstyles myself. I think it looked nice, though. I usually wore it up in a ponytail so it was a change for me, and I think hair down or half-up half-down is prettier, especially for pictures, than hair that's all up. Updos look really cool up close but they take forever and don't usually look that fantastic from far away or in pictures. Just my own opinion, though.
Google "celebrity hairstyles" and you can find lots and lots of pictures of fancy hair.
Also, if you're going with someone, don't try to match your dress to your date's shirt. You'll just look silly. But do find out what color he'll be wearing so you can get a boutonniere that will go with it.

Wear a strapless dress or a sweetheart...(no pink, black, red, gold or white) Everyone's gonna be in those colors... try mint, yellow orange or lavender. Do a half up do with curly tresses. Goddess!
