Some old people are ignorant and rude. Some young people are ignorant and rude. Some middle aged people are ignorant and rude. That's just the way it is, always has been and always will be!

Hold on there a minute. Do you live in a world that has changed so much that you can barely understand what is said to you because of the technical language. Yes they can be rude, you can breathe alright can you? you are in so much pain from arthritus that to move is agony, you've been on the waiting list for a hip replacement for two years ? No you haven't. You haven't had the pension you paid into compulsarily taken away basically because the government taxed pension funds and allowed companies to invest their own Pension funds in their own companies which then went bust? There are some horrid ones., in every generation. I didn't go through the war,but I saw the state Coventry was in afterwards. I have met a nun who in her youth worked behind enenmy lines with the French resistance, another lady who was a motorcycle courier, another who drove a lorry all with explosions going on around them. I have met gunners, pilots navigators a man who had to identify all the bodies of his friends who had been blown to bits and he had left early and was the only one left. It is the generations afterwards who haven't done much. My gran was a Jewess I wouldn't be here if not for those people.
If they push ask if you could help, show good manners and you may be surprised at the reaction. Yes there are some who I could cheerfully strangle, usually those who have been ex pats and used to servants but the apalling language and lack of manners displayed by those born more recently is far more shocking.
A woman walked past me in the super market today and told her small son that if he didn't shut it she would fill it for him accompanied by a raising of the fist. I know who I'd rather spend time with.
Someone who has replied said respect has to be earned and that set me off. How do they know what an oldie has done and what have they ever done, and how would anyone know unless it was printed across their chest?
I get more annoyed about the alcholics and druggies who are on benefits and blame everyone else for the way they are and shop lif and worse. Most of us have sh*t in our lives and have to cope.

In the main I have found the elderly humble and patient and often cheerful even when they are not in very good shape physically. Those who seem rude might be in the early stages of dementia. This is slow process and often bewilders those to whom it is happening. If I see what is called a grumpy old man and I guess his age to be around late 70s early 80s I think "This man was probably on a convoy ship in the North Atlantic or came off the beach at Dunkirk or fought in some way during WW2 " I do not judge. There is also the possibility that the rude ones are quite poor ,living on the basic pension and benefits andso are not getting a proper diet. We need to keep these things in mind we who are still young.

YES!!!! YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!
I was in the high street today, and an elderly lady literally ran me over with her trolley when I was standing outside a shop!!! I watched her carry on... she stayed in a straight line, would not deviate and ran over at least another 4 people that I saw! If that was a teenager on a skateboard, he'd have been arrested!
However, some of them are sweet, lovely and polite - take the Chelsea pensioners, for example. Adorable, wonderful, fantastic, polite and friendly. They are a shining example of how people should behave - NOT JUST old people - ALL people.
I know what elderly people did during the wars, but that does not give them the right to insult and abuse people now. As many people have said, respect has to be earned. You can't expect to be respected when you go around being nasty and cantankerous all the time.
I can't wait to get old... I'm going to wear a purple teacosy on my head, one of those really attractive greeny-brown coats, sheepskin slipper boots, have a really heavy walking stick and go around screaming at people and bashing them with my stick. In fact, I might do that tomorrow....

The term elderly applies to those 65 years and over. First some oldies are deaf and can appear ignorant this coupled with failing eyesight can make them seem rude. I believe oldies who display bad manners have always been that way, old age did not make them like that. What really annoys me is older people I know who look at the young and say they should do National Service when I know they didn't do it themselves!

The majority of the older generation that i meet are friendly, polite and charming. I have met some more awkward ones, but I find that if I smile politely and talk sweetly they generally respond well. They are so used to being sworn at, pushed out of the way and mistreated that they've come to assume that everyone is going to be the same. Show them that you're not one of the rude and rowdy crowd and they'll respond positively

Elderly people are just like other people, with the exception that our body parts are wearing out. Sometimes that makes us cranky.
I try to be polite, and I smile, and I say thank you when someone does something nice for me.
