you know those advertisements in guitar magazines that claim to give you perfect pitch? i was wondering, is it really that easy? is there a big "secret" behind it that enables you to grasp it? if there is, what is it?

I think that you have to be born with it. I know a lot of people who have 'relative' pitch -- meaning that you can sing any interval in a scale, but only if you are given the root note first. But I can only think of one piano player friend that can sing a perfect 'A' note no matter what din is going on in the background. If you can do that, you can win as many beers as you like -- as long as you've got an A440 tuning fork to prove it !!

Listening and practice, I have no training whatsoever, but I have always been told that I have perfect pitch. You have to be a really good listener though, the best way to hear yourself is to record yourself and listen-practice-listen-practice..etc.

I've always understood it was something you either had or didn't have - like being able to roll your tongue...
