Teenagers want to show their independence and individuality by going against they ways in which society would like them to behave. They also like to shock to test people's reactions and to see whether they can step over boundaries. Swearing is still shocking for many people in society, so they know that by swearing, they will achieve this. In addition, it seems to be a way of defining their social group - they swear because their peers do and that keeps them in the group.

It's not recent - it's been happening since the invention of the teenager.
This is one way they can rebel, and feel cool, and feel grown-up, all at once. It shocks adults, at least somewhat, and helps them blow off or at least express some stress. Most of them outgrow it, at least outwardly. I still have a few mental swearing sessions from time to time, but I usually don't verbalize them - at least, not when anyone is around to hear. When I'm driving, there are times when I've almost blistered the bumper of some knuckle-dragging dimwit who cuts me off, though.
