ok so my computer decided to be gay and at first, my dvdrw drive went from ultra dma mode 4 to udma 2.. so i tried fixing it by switching my hdd cable with the dvd drives ide cable and well i made it worse. now my hdd went from udma 5 down to two.. ive tried a bunch of registry hacks but none seem to work or stay. help anyone? is there a way i can force windows to put both back to udma 5 and 4? as in the dvd drive to 4 and the hdd to 5?

Try uninstalling the drives in the device manager, do the HDD last, and then restart the computer. That will reload the drivers, they may have become corrupt. It may also change the DMAs back to their proper settings. Be aware that WinXP MAY want you to reactivate.

UltraDMA is a communication method implemented over IDE. If you're using the slower UDMA modes, then you probably only have a 40-wire IDE cable in the machine; go to a computer store (bring the cables preferably) and ask them for 80-wire cables, they should cost a couple of dollars each at most; you should notice that the run of the cable appears to have many more, smaller lines running through it compared to your current ones.
