I know it is confusing for us American since we know so much about world geography we should be ashamed of ourselves.

England ranks as one of the most influential and far-reaching centres of cultural development in the world It is the place of origin of both the English language and the Church of England, and was the historic centre of the British Empire. It was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and was home to the Royal Society, which laid the foundations of modern experimental science. Many constitutional, governmental and legal innovations that had their origin in England have been widely adopted by other nations.
The Kingdom of England was an independent state until 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union resulted in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Honey, you need to get out more. That is a very sad question. Do you ever wonder why Americans have a bad reputation around the world? Look at your question...that is why. To answer your question, obviously it is a country. You need to get your world atlas out and start learning something about the world. Life isn't all about the United States.

England is the largest constituent country of the United Kingdom of Great Brittan. The others being Scottland and Wales. (I am not sure of the status of Northern Ireland).
Interesting sidenote: The Brittish flag (Union Jack) is a combination of the flags of England, Scottland and Wales.
